Weight loss and Genetics
Fit Into Your 'Genes'!

At Cincinnati Health Institute we have been researching the relationship between genetics and weight loss. We pride ourselves on the belief that there is not a one size fits all solution to weight loss. The most recent research finding, out of the University of Michigan, is part of the largest genome wide study and published in the Journal of Nature.

Senior study author Elizabeth Speliotes, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H, assistant of internal medicine and computational medicine and bioinformatics at the University of Michigan Health System, states that “the large number of genes makes it less likely that one solution to beat obesity will work for everyone and opens the door to possible ways we could use genetic clues to defeat obesity”.  She and her colleagues researched the genetic basis of body mass index in 339,224 people!

A companion study of 224, 459 individuals helped identify 49 sites in the genome associated with hip to waist ratio, a valid measure of body fat distribution.
It is thought that people with waistlines larger than hip circumference have more belly fat surrounding their abdominal organs, which increases the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Some genetic sites display stronger effects in women than men, confirming suspicions that genetic regulation of body fat distribution differs between sexes. These genetic sites and the mapping of them become even more important, because different areas of fat deposits appear to have different health risks. This research study sought to locate genes that control human body weight and size. They were able to identify over 100 locations across the genome, that play a part in numerous obesity traits

We offer genetic testing services and lab testing to our patients. Desbio DNA Genetique was designed to help develop a customized health-management plan, that is based on a patient’s genetic code. This is an easy, non-invasive procedure that can be completed in a five-minute office visit or virtually if you aren't a local patient. Let's help you fit into your 'genes'.

We also offer saliva tests that can provide a base line of your hormone, nutrient and neurotransmitter levels. Hormones, nutrients and neurotransmitters play a huge role in health and wellness. By finding out what these levels are we can offer you support to get them at optimal levels for your healthiest you. When these levels are stable and where they are meant to be, often enhanced weight loss is experienced.

Find out what you are deficient in before you spend on supplements you don't need. We want to take the guess work out of supplement purchases. This can be done in the comfort of your own home. We send the kit to you, you place your saliva in the tube and it can be shipped straight to the lab. They send us your results and we take it from there! Most patients are completely unaware of their hormone levels and this is a great place to start.

We’ve seen great success by using this as a starting point. It often makes weight loss easier and more affordable as you aren’t wasting money on supplements and products that aren’t going to work for you. Call our office anytime to speak to one of our doctors. They love what they do and can help suggest the most appropriate test for you. They’ve done it themselves, so they can share their experience and success with this.

This confirms what we’ve suspected all along. Weight loss should be tailored to the individual. What works for one person may not be right for another. Each individual has a unique genetic fingerprint and unique environmental exposure. This will require an individual approach to weight loss. We will work with you to find out what unique problems you are experiencing, to give you the best and most successful weight loss experience available. We consider this a specialty of ours and a crucial component in ensuring the very best in health and wellness for our patients.
