Digestive enzymes are produced by glands located in the mouth and throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Enzymes are foundational substances necessary for life and to keep metabolic pathways ignited. Essential in the digestion and assimilation of food, enzymes allow nutrients to be available or repair, growth, and energy.
Many factors may contribute to decrease in enzymatic production such as genetics, ageing, illness, medications, and poor diet. When enzymes are decreased, digestion is compromised resulting in decreased absorption of nutrients. Supplementation of enzymes is often helpful in such situations.
