Ideally, eating enough nutrients as part of a varied diet provides perfectly for the health and function of all cells, including immune cells. Certain diets and lifestyles may better prepare the body for illness and excess inflammation, but supplementing may be necessary. Things like aging, toxin exposure, lack of sleep, certain medications, and low vitamin D can all degrade the immune system. Each stage of the body’s immune response relies on the presence of many different micronutrients. Examples of nutrients identified as critical for the growth and function of immune cells include vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, selenium, iron, and protein (including the amino acid glutamine). Furthermore, starting a comprehensive multivitamin and mineral regimen to establish a healthy foundation and nutrient testing to determine any deficiencies that might need correction are great places to begin when seeking to prevent poor health and boost the immune system.
