Formaldehyde is a chemical that is very soluble in water, alcohol, or ether and is a colorless gas at room temperature. It is present in wood and coal smoke, especially in smoke prepared for curing ham and fish, and is very reactive and combines readily with many substances. It is emitted as a gas from clothing dyes, furniture, carpeting, fabrics, insulation, paneling, and particle board. Its vapors are intensely irritating to mucous membranes. Topical contact may produce irritant dermatitis. Listed by the FDA as a carcinogen.
For temporary relief of reactions related to formaldehyde sensitivity including, burning eyes, crying, dizziness, muscle spasms, shakiness, and throat inflammation.
